VOLUNTEERING AT TNG /

The New Gallery’s Volunteer Program welcomes individuals who are passionate about contemporary art, community engagement, and supporting artist-run culture. Volunteers play an essential role in keeping our artist-run centre active and accessible while gaining hands-on experience in arts administration, programming, and event coordination.

Our volunteers contribute across three main areas—Gallery Operations, Event Support, and Director/Coordinator Assistance—and are invited to join a welcoming, collaborative environment that values learning, inclusivity, and community connection. Volunteers are appreciated year-round through social events, exhibition previews, and opportunities to work closely with artists and curators.

BENEFITS

  • Work experience and letters of recommendation
  • An opportunity to connect and network with working artists, arts professionals and the larger arts community
  • Free membership to TNG with 25 hours of service.

We invite you to explore our current volunteer opportunities below:

If you’d like to volunteer on a casual basis and remain in the loop as new opportunities come up, subscribe to TNG’s volunteer list or by emailing info@TheNewGallery.org

Volunteers or interns seeking a long-term (three months or more) placement at the gallery should send us a copy of their resume and two external references that may be contacted by TNG (not family members or friends). You should also include a brief statement outlining why you wish to volunteer at TNG, what you hope to gain from your volunteer experience, and your availability. We’ll conduct a brief interview to discuss your commitment and interests. Knowing about you and how you can fit with our organization helps us ensure you have the best volunteer experience possible. If we’re a good fit for each other, we’ll work out a convenient schedule together.

We’d be happy to have you join our organization! If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact us at info@TheNewGallery.org

We invite you to explore our current volunteer opportunities:

Gallery Volunteer (General Role)

As a Gallery Volunteer, you are the welcoming face of The New Gallery. Your responsibilities include:
  • Keeping the gallery open to the public during exhibition hours
  • Greeting and assisting visitors, offering information about artworks and artists
  • Ensuring the gallery remains tidy and organized throughout the day
  • Monitoring visitor safety and maintaining a calm, welcoming environment

This position offers a great opportunity to meet artists and curators while learning about artist-run culture in Calgary’s Chinatown.

Event Support Volunteer

As an Event Support Volunteer, you will help make TNG’s events, such as exhibition openings, workshops, and community gatherings, run smoothly. Your responsibilities may include:
  • Assisting with exhibition installation and deinstallation
  • Supporting event setup, material preparation, and cleanup
  • Helping manage visitor flow and maintaining order during events
  • Communicating with artists, speakers, and community partners to ensure smooth coordination

This role is ideal for those who enjoy teamwork, hands-on engagement, and community-based art activities.

Director/Coordinator Assistant Volunteer

This position offers behind-the-scenes experience in the daily operations of an artist-run centre. Volunteers may work closely with the Operations Director, Programming Director, or Communication and outreach Coordinator depending on their interests and skills.
Responsibilities include:
  • Assisting with grant research, proposal writing, and report preparation
  • Organizing archives and digital records
  • Supporting communications with artists, collaborators, and partner organizations
  • Helping with social media posts, poster design, and event promotion

This is a great opportunity for those interested in arts administration, curatorial work, or arts communication.

Internships:

Undergraduate students from the Alberta College of Art + Design and the University of Calgary’s Fine Art Department can also gain valuable experience while earning credits through internship programs offered by their institutions. We will work with you and your instructor to ensure a rewarding experience for everyone involved. Contact your internship coordinator to discuss a possible placement with us.

Board of Directors:

The role of the Board of Directors is to govern the organization in accordance with the Bylaws and applicable laws, to establish the organization’s direction and monitor its performance. A one-year commitment is required.

Committees:

We encourage interested members to become involved in the Society through one of our standing committees (Programming, Equity, Communications, Fundraising, & Human Resources).
