Ladies Invitational Deadbeat Society
Incredisensual Panty Raid Laff Along Residency at the John Snow House
June 11 to July 5, 2012
In June 2012, The New Gallery welcomed the Ladies Invitational Deadbeat Society (LIDS) to Calgary for an intensive research-creation-presentation project, the Incredisensual Panty Raid Laff Along.
Using the archives and resource centre of The New Gallery (TNG), housed in the historic John Snow House in Calgary, LIDS continued their meditations on feminist archiving, artistic labour, and mentorship within artist-run culture. The gals will worked with, alongside, and against TNG’s archived history to expand the ways in which this history might be read. As always, tangential narratives, inter-generational artistic collaboration, connections to local historical lineages, and panties were revealed the public.
The ladies worked throughout the month hosting informal performances, telekinesis practice, archive excavation, and a series of afternoon tea discussions that draw on the politics and herstory of Alberta Artist-Run culture and materials of yore that are housed in the archive.
Biography
The Ladies’ Invitational Deadbeat Society (LIDS) was founded in 2006 as a closely-knit affiliation of then-unemployed cultural workers, not ‘working,’ but still bustin’ ass within Alberta artist-run culture. LIDS has realized a number of performative n’ craft projects in a few galleries, and just around town. LIDS core members have held positions as board and staff of several Alberta artist-run organizations, exhibited their own work, published and lectured throughout Canada and the world, but future endeavors include bummin’, and nothing too serious. LIDS is: Anthea Black, Nicole Burisch, and Wednesday Lupypciw.
The LIDS publication, patch and poster are available at TNG.
