Frame

Cristina Wang & Natalie Gerber

July 11th, 1-3PM
The New Gallery, 208 Centre St S

The performance "Frame" explores the questions; What is a frame? Who set the frame? How to break the frame and find the true self?

As a subject of society, I am defined by its expectations: to be an excellent student, a filial daughter, a virtuous wife, and a mother who makes her children proud. These expectations evolve into external scrutiny, which then turns into self-scrutiny and self-expectation. The roles of student, daughter, wife, and mother are all socially constructed, and it seems I have forgotten how to be myself. I am not who I am; I am the one who is constantly scrutinizing myself observing every moment with extreme criticism and doubt. All those external factors shape my behaviour, thinking, and self-identity. I try to escape and break free from these constraints. At the same time, I ask myself: without these social "selves" as references, how can I truly see and understand myself? How do I really know me?
